Like a joke taken to it’s furthest possible conclusion, SYFY has unleashed the trailer to The Banana Splits Movie.

And the funniest part?

I don’t completely hate this!

Aiming for a direct-to-video release, The Banana Splits Movie recasts the cult-classic children’s performers as robotic slashers, mindlessly killing their audience. All while spouting their catchphrases, seemingly voiced by their original voice actors or very good approximations of such.

The comparisons to Five Nights At Freddy’s are pretty apparent from the jump. And I am still not too keen on the channels “so bad, it’s good” approach to their features. But who among us wasn’t awoken in a cold sweat at 3 am when they had left Cartoon Network on and these vacant-faced horrors would come zooming onto the screen in their impossible Power Wheels-like car?

I mean, who knows? This could end up surprising us all! It does come from one of the second-unit directors of Channel Zero, which explains the eerie dream-like tone the trailer has. Director Danishka Esterhazy was also a part of the infamous Winnipeg Film Group, the same collective that produced Guy Maddin! So maybe this thing has a bit more going for it than Film Twitter is willing to admit.
