HANELLE CULPEPPER WILL BE THE FIRST WOMAN TO DIRECT ‘STAR TREK’ SERIES

Read Time:1 Minute, 33 Second

For Star Trek, there hasn’t been a lot of firsts that we can talk about. However, between 2017 til now, we totally can. In 2017, Star Trek: Discovery debuted Michael Burnham, a Starfleet First Officer-turned-mutineer played by Sonequa Martin-Green. Oh, I should also mention she is the first black woman to lead a Star Trek series in the history of the franchise. Today, we have another double-dose of goodness coming from beyond the stars. Deadline has announced that Hanelle Culpepper will be directing the first two episodes of the new Jean-Luc Picard series.

This is more than exciting news for any Trekkie who is already familiar with Culpepper’s work from Star Trek: Discovery. Culpepper helmed ‘Vaulting Ambition’ in season one, with another episode in season two. The news comes after the barebones but brilliant details of the Jean-Luc Picard series have unleashed. The new series coming exclusively to CBS All-Access will star Patrick Stewart as he jumps back into the role. According to Deadline, the new series “will follow the iconic character into the next chapter of his life.”

Alex Kurtzman welcomes Culpepper onboard with this new series stating that “she’s the perfect person to re-introduce the beloved character of Picard to longtime fans and new viewers alike.” Truthfully, it’s going to be exciting to observe what Culpepper does to bring Picard back to our screens. Culpepper’s resume shows that she has the talent to crush it. She’s worked on such shows as Counterpart, Gotham, American Crime, How to Get Away with Murder, and more. She’s also attached to the upcoming AMC show NOS4A2, based on the book by Joe Hill.

Are you guys just as excited about Culpepper’s directorial announcement? How do you feel about the new show? What do you hope to see in Picard’s journey? Let us know!
