On Sunday night, the Academy Awards was busy solving racism by awarding Green Book with best picture.
But something even more important was happening on Sunday! Fangoria, the recently-revitalized classic horror magazine, was announcing the winners of its annual Chainsaw Awards, which are much more in-line with reality. One of my favorite films of 2018 was Hereditary, and it cleaned up at the Chainsaw Awards.
Toni Collette — who was snubbed at the Oscars due to their anti-horror bias — won Best Actress. The movie also picked up Best Supporting Actor for Alex Wolff, Best Director and Best Screenplay for Ari Aster, as well as Best Kill and Best Wide-Release Movie. A well-deserved haul for an instant classic.
The other big winner of the Chainsaw Awards was, fittingly, Mandy. My favorite film of 2018 nabbed a Best Actor win for Nicolas Cage (something the cowards in the Academy haven’t done since 1996!), Best Score, and Best Limited-Release Movie.
Overall, it was a reflection of the great and original horror movies we got last year.
